The UK’s classic car sector is anything but niche. Home to 1.93 million historic vehicles, it generates an impressive £7.3 billion in annual turnover. Around 691,000 owners spend an average of £4,500 each year on their vehicles, collectively supporting a dedicated workforce of 34,500 people. These headline figures underline a sector that makes a significant contribution to the UK economy.

Yet behind this success lies a growing challenge. Those closest to the industry know it well: a rapidly ageing demographic, both among vehicle owners and the skilled professionals who keep these cars on the road. Without action, the future of the sector is uncertain.

Securing that future means nurturing the next generation and introducing young people to the breadth of career opportunities available. Achieving this requires coordinated, committed support from organisations, sponsors and supporters who recognise the importance of the work championed by StarterMotor. We see our role as essential, not only in preserving the UK’s automotive heritage, but in rejuvenating and energising the industry for decades to come.

This year’s Royal Automobile Club Historic Awards, held in late November, provided a powerful reminder of the sector’s passion and potential. Hosted in the near-regal surroundings of the RAC’s Pall Mall headquarters, the evening brought together infectious enthusiasm from across the industry. With categories ranging from Restoration to Outstanding Journalism and Personal Endeavour, the awards celebrated excellence and achievement across the board.

We were proud to support the Young Achiever Award, contributing nominations and presenting the award on the night. Our delight in handing the trophy to Samantha ‘Sammy’ Ruff was twofold. Not only had we supported her nomination, but her employer, Harry Fraser Upholstery, is based at Bicester Motion, the special place we are proud to call home.

A trimmer at Harry Fraser Upholstery, Sammy is an inspirational young talent whose passion and commitment are already making a tangible impact on the sector. Having joined the company in 2021 with no prior experience, she has rapidly established herself as one of the most respected professionals in the trade.

While there can be only one winner, we would also like to recognise the two outstanding runners-up, Will Marsh and Jack Rawles, both clearly stars of the future. In addition, StarterMotor Ambassador Emily Grace, who was nominated for the Young Achiever Award, received a well-deserved special mention on the night.
