The historic-car sector contributes more than £10 billion to the economy each year. It employs thousands of professionals in engineering, sales and auctions, insurance, communications, finance and much more.

StarterMotor wants more of these roles occupied by young people. The need for engineers, craftspeople and other mechanical specialists is great, and the charity supports colleges including Heritage Skills Academy based at Bicester Heritage and Brooklands.

ENGINEERING CAREERS
The most common way into the sector is via engineering. Ambassadors encompass the full range of opportunities such a skillset can offer, working in Formula 1 and international motorsport to maintaining century-old vintage cars.
SALES & MARKETING CAREERS
Communications is as popular an avenue as it is important: telling the success stories of the industry is vital to its future. Yet that first break is often the hardest, because often experience is everything. Opportunities can take you trackside around the world, behind the scenes of the biggest events and into the showrooms of the most exclusive places.
INSURANCE & FINANCE CAREERS
It will be of no surprise that some of the most successful companies in the old-car industry are insurers and financiers. The people driving those firms are often highly specialised in the field, with a knowledge of classics second to none.
EVENTS MANAGEMENT CAREERS
Owners of old cars love nothing better than to take their car to an event – often, it’s all they do with the car. The sector thrives but has challenges, which is an opportunity for young people and the skills learned in events roles are transferable to all walks of life.

StarterMotor hosts school careers days introducing Year 9s and up to the wealth of opportunities in the Historic Car sector, from apprenticeships to sales, marketing to design, event management to insurance and finance, and many more.

Typically, around 300 students will visit Bicester Heritage and, in groups of around 30, enjoy bespoke presentations from specialists and industry leaders. We also visit schools, bringing a car or two, to make career presentations. If your school might like a visit, please contact us for details.
